What is a Dual Sprocket Drum Motor?

A dual sprocket drum motor (also called double-sprocket motorized pulley) is a drum motor (motorized pulley) equipped with two sprockets on the same end face. Unlike a conventional drum motor that only drives the belt directly, the dual sprocket drum motor uses its two sprockets to transmit power via chains to one or two adjacent idler rollers, enabling "one motor drives multiple rollers" in a chain conveyor system.

Important clarification: A dual sprocket drum motor is not the same as a roller with one sprocket on each end (which is used for AGV/forklift access aisles). The defining feature of a dual sprocket drum motor is two sprockets at one end – one for power input (though the motor is inside, it can still receive chain drive from an upstream motor in some layouts) and one for power output, or more commonly, both sprockets output power to two separate chains/trains simultaneously.

Key Differences from Single Sprocket Drum Motor

Aspect Single Sprocket Drum Motor Dual Sprocket Drum Motor
Number of sprockets 1 (at one end) 2 (usually at the same end)
Transmission capacity Drives one chain / one idler Drives two chains / two idlers simultaneously or in cascade
Load capacity Light to medium duty Medium to heavy duty, better load sharing
Power distribution Single path Dual path, reduces total motors needed
Smoothness May vibrate under heavy load Lower vibration & noise, better stability
Typical applications Small parcel sorting, light assembly Heavy pallet conveyors, automotive assembly, airport baggage

Main Advantages

1.Fewer motors, lower system cost

2.Heavy load capacity

3.Compact installation

4.Easy maintenance & long service life

5.Low noise

6.Flexible customization

Typical Applications

Heavy‑duty roller conveyors – automotive parts, battery trays, home appliances, mechanical components

Pallet conveyors – warehouses, AS/RS entrances/exits, heavy pallet handling

Airport baggage handling systems – high reliability and continuous operation

Food & beverage end‑of‑line packaging – stainless steel version with dual sprockets, washdown‑ready

Automated assembly lines – e.g. engine or motor assembly requiring strict synchronization

Outdoor or harsh environments – mining, ports, recycling (with high IP rating)
