MDR Motorized Roller Conveyor vs Traditional Powered Roller Conveyor

Oct 15, 2026|

Motorized Drive Roller (MDR) conveyor is the mainstream choice for modern automated material handling, while traditional powered roller conveyors (chain or O-ring driven) remain common for heavy-duty lines. Understanding the key differences helps buyers select the right system.

Traditional roller conveyors use a centralized drive: one external AC motor powers a whole section via chains or O-rings, so all rollers run synchronously. They offer low upfront cost, simple control and strong load capacity - ideal for pallets and heavy workpieces. However, when the main motor or chain fails, the whole line stops. Without accumulation, goods press against each other, risking damaged cartons.

MDR conveyor adopts a distributed drive: each zone uses built-in 24V DC motorized rollers with sensors, supporting zero-pressure accumulation (ZPA). Products queue without squeezing, protecting fragile goods. Rollers only run when goods are detected, saving energy. Low voltage and no exposed chains improve safety and reduce noise. One faulty roller is replaced individually without stopping the whole line.

Select MDR for packaging, sorting and assembly lines needing accumulation, low noise and flexibility. Select traditional roller conveyor for heavy pallet transport, simple continuous conveying or dusty heavy-industry environments.
