What is a Drum Motor?
A Drum Motor (also known as a Motorized Pulley) is an integrated conveyor drive unit that fully encloses the motor, gearbox (or direct-drive outer rotor), bearings, and multiple sealing systems inside the drum shell. The shaft remains stationary while the outer shell rotates and directly serves as the drive pulley (head pulley) for the belt conveyor.
In simple terms: a traditional conveyor system requires an external motor, gearbox, coupling, chain, and sprocket-multiple components-just to drive one belt. A drum motor packs all of these inside a single drum. Plug it in, the drum rotates, and it drives the belt directly.
The drum motor concept was first recorded in 1928, but it was not until the early 1950s that it was first produced specifically for conveyor belt applications. After nearly a century of development, drum motors have become an indispensable core drive component in modern industrial automation and smart logistics.
