Products Description
1) Ball transfer units are omnidirectional, load-bearing spherical balls mounted within a fixture. They are identical in principle to an inverted ball computer mouse or trackball, except that they are arranged side by side.
2) Typically, the design involves a single large ball supported by smaller ball bearings. They are often used in an inverted ball-up position, where objects are quickly moved onto a set of units, called a ball transfer table, a conveyor system. This allows manual transfers to and from a machine to a different part of another conveyor system.
3) They are used in airport baggage delivery, or as part of industrial manufacturing systems. Prior to the invention of the universal ball transfer, first patented by Autoset Production Ltd in 1958, these applications had been addressed by using inverted castors. However, castors identify tracks, which means that the wheels must be aligned before a change of direction can be achieved. Universal ball transfer units can also be used as castors in a non-inverted ball-down position, but this use is limited by weight limitations and floor type.
4) Manufacturers have solved this problem with universal ball transfer units combined with the recirculating ball principle, but the inverted position remains the most common application and the least problematic.
